LA LA Land(wich)
Just over a week ago I hopped on a flight from NYC to LAX for a “business trip” of the sandwich eating variety (ok, that wasn’t the only reason I went). After landing, I headed straight to Mariscos Jalisco to get their famous shrimp tacos and tostada. To be clear, these are not sandwiches. I just thought I needed to get the tacos out of the way to open up the rest of my schedule for eating iconic sandwiches.
Alas, the Sandwich Gods looked down upon this taco decision and as punishment sent a gust of wind to turn my tostada’s styrofoam plate over right onto my lap. Now doused in a not insignificant amount of shrimpy lime juice, I learned my lesson and shifted my attention to the sandwiches of LA.
First up was dinner at the famed Canter's Deli. This was a very solid entree into the historic LA deli scene.
Canter’s, which claims to have sold over 10M lbs of corned beef, stays open 24/7 except when it closes for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
I ordered the very respectable Turkey Club. And yes, blurred in the background is a plate of corned beef. 🤷
The next day a group of us set out on what was the first all-day, multi-location, Club:Sandwich outing. We continued exploring the LA deli scene by checking off the #19 at Langer’s (as fantastic as advertised). Prior to that, for breakfast, I got a view into what I believe is a newish phenomenon - high quality LA bagels. And we closed out the tour with a #veggiesandwich at a top spot called Open Market where they serve up a few lookers.
I also ordered the #19 with a side plate of meat, this time a scoop of chopped liver. The perfect pairing.
The Langer’s #19 was so good it prompted me to buy a t-shirt. Every ingredient was a 10/10, but the rye bread really stood out. They supposedly double bake it to give it a crunchy crust while somehow keeping the inside super soft and fresh.
Earlier in the day we started off at Layla Bagels in Santa Monica. Their take on a breakfast sandwich included thinly sliced jalapenos which I’m not sure I’ve ever had on a BEC, but was a phenomenal addition. Highly recommend.
The Mariposa from Open Market in Koreatown has oyster mushrooms al pastor and another delicious first for me - pickled pineapple.
What a day, what an outing. Great food and great company.
Ok, that’s it. Hopefully you’re feeling inspired to pull together a group of your closest sandwich loving friends to go eat until you can’t move. If you do, let us know about it in the MSD.
Later!
