Hello Sandwich, My Old Friend
+ We eat brisket at brunch
Hey friends! Long time. You may have wondered (probably not), where we’ve been. The answer to that question is - being Club Presidents AND Members is exhausting work. Filling, too. So we unilaterally decided that a 3 month newsletter break was warranted.
In the background we’ve actually been up to some fun things, which we can hopefully share soon. Perhaps more importantly, we’ve been eating many delicious sandwiches. Hopefully you have as well.
Most recently I found myself on the Lower East Side of Manhattan on a weekday at around 10:30am. In search of a quick cup of coffee, I ended up stumbling past Russ & Daughters Cafe - one of my favorite food spots in all of New York (maybe the world?). For the uninitiated, Russ & Daughters opened as a fish appetizing shop in 1914 and has been expertly slicing and serving up some of the most loved smoked fish for over 100 years.

The appetizing business moved to a new location in 1920 and they’ve been there ever since.
As time went on, like any smart business, they introduced sandwiches to their offerings - some of the best smoked fish stacks you can find. And a little over 10 years ago they expanded on that by opening their first sit-down cafe which has all of the charm of their 100+ year old shop, and a vast menu of high quality and delicious food.
Alas, I was only in the market for a cup of coffee. So I did what any responsible person in my situation would do - I sat down and ordered that cup of coffee…and then tacked on a brisket sandwich they were featuring as a special.

This brisket sandwich took some inspiration from the classic Philly Cheesesteak by featuring Cooper Sharp American and fried onions.
I was pretty excited about my order, especially because it came on a freshly baked bialy, and with a side of Zhug sauce (think cilantro and spicy green peppers). But something felt off about being there and ordering a brisket sandwich at 10:30am. I needed to better honor the history of Russ & Daughters, and so I also ordered their Pickled Herring Trio.

The “trio” comes as 6 little open faced sandwiches featuring their pickled herring with 3 different toppers, all situated on house-made pumpernickel.
That felt much more balanced, and now I could rest easy and drink that coffee I set out for.
OK, that’s all we’ve got for you this time. It’s great to be back. Hope everyone is thinking of some good ways to turn leftover Thanksgiving dishes into sandwiches! When you do, add ‘em to the MSD!
Until next time, may your coffee come with a splash of sandwich.
